Located in Dubai and established in 2015, the Sustainable City is a modern property development with a goal of having a net-zero energy. It is currently a fully functional city with 500 villas, 2700 residents, as well as full services provided from sports and leisure to education and research, with close attention to producing clean energy, reducing energy consumption, controlling emissions and recycling waste.
For instance, there are 40,000 solar panels installed that generate 10 megawatts-hour of electrical solar energy used to power up the city. Excess water from showers and washing machines gets treated, stored in a communal lake and then tapped for irrigation purposes, whereas food waste is dealt with through the placement of recycling bins in every district. The houses are oriented to the north to benefit from the shade, and the wall paint is UV reflective in an effort to reduce air conditioning costs. In terms of transportation, cash incentives are offered to residents who revert to electrical vehicles.
All these environmental practices have resulted in a reduced carbon emission of 3 metric tons per person per year in the city as opposed to the global average of 7.
